Our foundation

Isaiah 61

Beauty for ashes. The restored become restorers.

The mission of Jesus

At the start of his public ministry, Jesus read from Isaiah and declared it fulfilled (Luke 4:16–21). We understand restoration first through him, not through the strength of a programme. We offer faith openly, but never make help or belonging conditional on it.

Three promises we hold on to

Good news reaches the poor, the brokenhearted are cared for, and freedom is announced.
Isaiah 61:1

This passage speaks into sorrow and captivity rather than standing at a distance. Men should be met in the reality of their lives, with dignity and hope.

God exchanges the signs of grief for beauty, joy and praise.
Isaiah 61:3

The image does not deny what has been lost. It speaks of a gift and a changed future in the very place where mourning has been real.

Restored people take part in rebuilding places that have been devastated.
Isaiah 61:4

People who receive restoration become people who rebuild. The restored become restorers.

The promise, in full

In Luke 4:16–21, Jesus opens the scroll of Isaiah and reads the promise of good news and freedom. Here is the complete chapter that shapes our ministry: comfort, restoration and lives rebuilt for God’s glory.

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

New International Version

1The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,because the Lord has anointed meto proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim freedom for the captivesand release from darkness for the prisoners,

2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favorand the day of vengeance of our God,to comfort all who mourn,

3and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beautyinstead of ashes, the oil of joyinstead of mourning, and a garment of praiseinstead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness,a planting of the Lordfor the display of his splendor.

4They will rebuild the ancient ruinsand restore the places long devastated;they will renew the ruined citiesthat have been devastated for generations.

5Strangers will shepherd your flocks;foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.

6And you will be called priests of the Lord, you will be named ministers of our God.You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast.

7Instead of your shameyou will receive a double portion, and instead of disgraceyou will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.

8“For I, the Lord, love justice;I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my peopleand make an everlasting covenant with them.

9Their descendants will be known among the nationsand their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledgethat they are a people the Lord has blessed.”

10I delight greatly in the Lord;my soul rejoices in my God.For he has clothed me with garments of salvationand arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

11For as the soil makes the sprout come upand a garden causes seeds to grow,so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousnessand praise spring up before all nations.

Why it shapes what we do

Our vision reaches beyond receiving help. Through fellowship, discipleship, skills and service, we want men equipped for purposeful lives and able to stand beside the next man.
